Back in Australia after Fraternity’s unsuccessful sojourn in the UK, Bon hooked up with Adelaide musician Peter Head (also known as Peter Beagley, and the father of Australian actress and singer Loene Carmen). Peter was managing an art gallery when they met; Bon was doing some gardening jobs at the time.

‘We’d have jam sessions,’ Peter recalled in 2006, ‘each with an old acoustic nylon-string guitar. Bon was basic on guitar, and only knew what we called the “cowboy” chords. But he had a good ear for what came when. I taught him chord progressions, scales and music theory, which he lapped up like a dog.’

Bon started singing with Peter’s band, a loose collective named the Mount Lofty Rangers. Bon was also starting to write his own songs, including ‘Clarissa’, a country ballad about an Adelaide girl, and a tune called ‘I’ve Been Up In The Hills Too Long’.

Peter spent $40 on a recording session, and Bon sang two songs written by Peter—‘Round and Round’ and ‘Carey Gully’. The songs were released under Bon’s name twenty-three years later, on a CD released by Head Office Records.

Bon enjoyed his time with the Mount Lofty Rangers, though in May 1974, after an argument at a band rehearsal, he stormed off on his motorbike and crashed into a car. He was in a coma for three days.
